Business Type (Certification)
  • 8 (A) Certified
  •   The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) developed the 8(a) Business Development program to help small disadvantaged businesses compete in the American economy and access the federal procurement market. To be qualify, a firm must be (1) a small business, (2) unconditionally owned and controlled by one or more socially and economically disadvantaged individuals who are of good character and citizens of the United States, and (3) demonstrate potential for success. To become certified with the SBA in the 8(a) Business Development program, begin by contacting the local SBA district office serving your area.
  • Hubzone Small Business
  •   The HUBZone Empowerment Contracting program provides federal contracting opportunities for qualified small businesses located in distressed areas. To participate in the HUBZone Empowerment Contracting Program, a concern must be determined to be a "qualified HUBZone small business concern." A firm can be found to be a qualified HUBZone concern, if :
    1. It is a small business
    2. It is located in a "historically underutilized business zone" (HUBZone)
    3. It is owned and controlled by one or more U.S. Citizen
    4. At least 35% of its employees reside in a HUBZone
  • Large Business
  •   A business which in not classified as a small business by the Small Business Administration
  • Minority Owned Business
  •   A small business that is at least 51 percent unconditionally owned by one or more individuals who are both socially and economically disadvantaged, or a publicly owned business that has at least 51 percent of its stock unconditionally owned by one or more historically underutilized (socially and economically disadvantaged) individuals and has its management and daily business controlled by one or more such individuals. A minority owned business is also a small business that is at least 51 percent unconditionally owned by an economically disadvantaged Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian Organization, or a publicly owned business that has at least 51 percent of its stock unconditionally owned by one of these entities, that has its management and daily business controlled by members of an historically underutilized (economically disadvantaged) Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian Organization, and that meets the Small Business Administration regulations.
  • Small Business
  •   A business, including its affiliates, that is independently owned and operated, not dominant in the field of operation in which it is bidding on government contracts, and qualifies as a small business under the criteria and size standards of the Small Business Administration regulations. The company is also considered to be a small business if the enterprise has been recognized as an 8(a) certified business by the federal government.
  • Small Disadvantage Business
  •   A "Small Disadvantaged business concern" - means any business concern (1) which is at least 51 percent owned by one or more socially and economically disadvantaged individuals; (2) or, in the case of any publicly owned business, at least 51 percent of the stock of which is owned by one or more socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. Small businesses wanting to take advantage of the Small Disadvantage Business (SDB) Program must be certified by the Small Business Administration (SBA).
  • Veteran Owned Business
  •   A small business concerned that is at least 51 percent owned by one or more individuals who are American Veterans. This can include a publicly owned business that has at least 51 percent of its stock unconditionally owned by one or more American Veterans and whose management and daily business is controlled by one or more such individuals.   • Woman Owned Business
  •   "Woman-owned business" - means a business that is at least 51 percent owned by a woman or women who are U.S. citizens and who also control and operate the business.


    DUNS Number - Dun and Bradstreet Number
    The Dun and Bradstreet DUNS (Data Universal Numbering System) is a worldwide method of classifying businesses. The number can be used to uniquely identify a business, or to link it to other entities within a corporation. For more information, please visit www.dnb.com.

    CAGE Code
    The Commercial And Government Entity (CAGE) code is a five character ID number used extensively within the Federal Government. The Defense Logistics Information Service (DLIS), who administers the CAGE code system, has placed a cage code search feature on their web site. This will help you determine if a code has been previously assigned to your company.
    For those not listed in the database, the CAGE request process is incorporated in the CCR registration. Therefore, upon activation in CCR your company will be assigned a CAGE Code. CCR is an authorized source for the assignment of CAGE Codes. CAGE Codes will be assigned to vendors as their CCR registration goes through the validation process.

    GSA Schedule Contract Number
    GSA (General Services Administration) Schedule is a negotiated contract for fixed price, fixed length, indefinite demand, indefinite quantity (ID/IQ), including terms and conditions to offer products or service for government buyers. Agencies then contact the vendor directly to buy under those terms.
    You get the GSA Schedule Contract Number after you have successfully negotiated with GSA the terms and conditions to provide your services or products to US government buyers on a GSA Schedule Contract. It takes time - often 4-6 months. For more information, please visit www.gsa.gov.

    SIC - Standard Industrial Classification
    A code representing a category within the Standard Industrial Classification System administered by the Statistical Policy Division of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. The system was established to classify all industries in the US economy. A two-digit code designates each major industry group, which is coupled with a second two-digit code representing subcategories.

    UNSPSC - United Nations Standard Products & Services Code
    The Universal Standard Products and Services Classification (UNSPSC) is an open global coding system that classifies products and services. The UNSPSC is used extensively around the world in the electronic catalogs, search engines, procurement application systems and accounting systems.
